Edinburgh University Press

Edinburgh University Press has each new book proposal peer reviewed by at least two reviewers. The reviewers’ comments are shared anonymously with the author or book editor who then have the opportunity to respond to the reviewers’ feedback. If the reviewers have suggested substantial changes, the revised book proposal goes back to them for further comment; we also ask reviewers for a formal recommendation as to whether or not the book should be published.

If the proposed book is part of a series, the series editor(s) will also review the proposal and provide a recommendation for or against publication.

If a book successfully completes peer review, it is then presented to EUP’s Academic Committee, which is comprised of senior academics from the University of Edinburgh. They review each new book proposal alongside its peer reviews and the author’s response to the reviewers, and make a final contract decision. Each proposal is also reviewed by an internal publishing committee (with colleagues from sales, marketing and editorial attending) to assess the book’s fit with our publishing strategy, its economic viability and its market.

Post-contract, full manuscripts are peer reviewed before production begins if the book is an author’s first, if the book is part of a series or if our academic committee have recommended a manuscript review.
