NWO - The Dutch Research Council

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) funds top researchers, and steers the course of Dutch science by means of research programmes and by managing the national knowledge infrastructure.

NWO ensures quality and innovation in science and facilitates its impact on society. Its main task is to fund scientific research at public research institutions in the Netherlands, especially universities. NWO focuses on all scientific disciplines and fields of research.

The funds are allocated by means of a national competition on the basis of quality and independent assessment and selection procedures. NWO plays different roles as a broad, national research organisation that actively contributes to various elements of national science and innovation policy.

Publications that are funded through NWO’s Open Access Books funding scheme must be made available on the platform of the publisher and also have to be deposited in the OAPEN Library. This concerns all peer-reviewed academic books, book chapters and collected volumes which are the result of or report on research funded partly or in whole by NWO and are primarily aimed at an academic reading audience.

NWO has a dedicated funding scheme for Open Access Books which are the result of research projects funded by NWO.
